
The Generative AI Commons, a working group of LF AI & Data, will participate in several events during UN Open Source Week 2026 in New York City from June 22–26, bringing together leaders from government, industry, academia, and open source communities to discuss the future of responsible and trustworthy AI.
Responsible GenAI at Scale: Open Source Commons and Governance

As part of Open Source x AI Day, Generative AI Commons Co-Chair and LF AI & Data Governing Board member Anni Lai will host a session titled “Responsible GenAI at Scale: Open Source Commons and Governance.” The session will explore how open source communities can help advance responsible AI development, governance, and adoption at scale.
The session will begin with a keynote from:
- Alberto Gago, Director General, Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA)
This will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Anni Lai, featuring:
- Nithya Ruff, Chair, Linux Foundation Board of Directors
- Susan Malaika, Senior Technical Staff Member, IBM
- Sai Chandra Pandraju, Machine Learning Engineer, Red Hat
- Dr. Cailean Osborne, Head of Ecosystem Development, Probabl
The panel will discuss responsible AI frameworks, practical implementation, model openness, and the role of open source communities in building trustworthy AI systems.
The session will conclude with a fireside chat between Anni Lai and Kush R. Varshney, IBM Fellow, IBM Research.
The discussion will focus on operationalizing responsible AI, balancing innovation and governance, and the role of open source in advancing trustworthy AI worldwide.

The Generative AI Commons is also co-hosting the Open Source Responsible AI Meetup, an evening event bringing together students, developers, researchers, and open source practitioners. Attendees will learn more about the Generative AI Commons and several open source AI initiatives, including:
- Docling, an LF AI & Data project currently being used in a United Nations project

The event will include networking opportunities, technical discussions, and presentations from community leaders participating in UN Open Source Week.
Community Day on Open Source and Digital Collaboration

On June 26, members of the Generative AI Commons and the broader Linux Foundation ecosystem will participate in a full-day Community Day event focused on open source collaboration and digital innovation.
Organized by Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), OpenForum Europe (OFE), CURIOSS, and Red Hat, the event will feature community-driven sessions exploring how open source technologies can help advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Global Digital Compact.
