In February 2024, LF AI & Data became a part of the AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC). Led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the Department of Commerce, this Consortium brings together more than 200 prominent AI organizations to lay the groundwork for trustworthy AI. This marks a significant step in advancing responsible artificial intelligence (AI).

LF AI & Data Foundation will collaborate with NIST and the newly created Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium. Together, they strive to create science-based and empirically supported guidelines and standards for AI measurement and policy, laying the groundwork for global AI safety.  Members of the Generative AI Commons communities have joined all 5 NIST workgroups to contribute to the discussion and planned deliverables. The NIST workgroups are:

  • Working Group #1 – Risk Management For Generative AI
  • Working Group #2 – Synthetic Data
  • Working Group #3 – Capability Evaluations
  • Working Group #4 – Red Teaming
  • Working Group #5 – Safety and Security

This collaborative effort aims to prepare the U.S. for addressing the capabilities of the next generation of AI models and systems, incorporating risk management strategies for frontier models, new applications, and innovative approaches.

AISIC’s alignment with President Biden’s Executive Order #141110 underscores the strategic importance of governing the development and use of AI safely and responsibly. The collaboration between LF AI & Data, NIST AISIC  and the larger community involved in this important initiative represents a shared commitment ensuring the safety and trustworthiness of AI systems. The guidelines and standards from this collaboration will provide a solid framework for AI practitioners, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to responsibly navigate the complexities of AI systems.

The LF AI & Data is an umbrella foundation of the Linux Foundation that supports open source innovation in AI and data. The mission of LF AI & Data is to build and support an open artificial intelligence (AI) and data community, and drive open source innovation in the AI and data domains by enabling collaboration and the creation of new opportunities for all the members of the community. The foundation hosts open source projects within artificial intelligence and the data space as well as open models and datasets. It also hosts the continually evolving AI Landscape.

As a dedicated arm of the LF AI and Data foundation, the  Generative AI Commons is focused on fostering the democratization, advancement and adoption of efficient, secure, reliable, and ethical AI open source innovations through neutral governance, open and transparent collaboration and education. Recent publications include the Model Openness Framework  with supporting materials.  The Model Openness Framework is  a ranked classification system that rates machine learning models based on their completeness and openness, following principles of open science, open source, open data, and open access. Work is now underway on a Responsible AI Framework and Generative AI Reference Architecture. We hope that these activities, projects, and publications, will align well with the AISIC collaboration and will make a solid contribution to AISIC.
